Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom on the eastern edge of the Himalayas, is known for its monasteries, fortresses (or dzongs) and spectacular landscapes ranging from subtropical plains to rugged mountains and valleys. Open to travelers only since the last three decades, Bhutan remains Asia's most mysterious and revered travel destinations. In the High Himalayas, peaks such as 7,326m Jomolhari are popular trekking destinations. Paro Taktsang Monastery (also known as Tiger's Nest) clings to the cliffs above the forest of the Paro Valley.

Itinerary


BHUTAN

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN PARO/THIMPU
Arrival at Paro airport, transfer by road to Thimphu, Arrival at hotel. Free day. Accommodation (L+D = Lunch + Dinner).

DAY 2: THIMPU
Breakfast, visit the National Library which preserves a magnificent collection of Buddhist texts and manuscripts written in the local language, the dzonghka, the Zorig Chusum Fine Arts Institute which displays traditional Thangka paintings and other traditional arts, the textile museum which shows the refined textile tradition. In the afternoon, we will visit the Memorial Chorten, a religious construction in the form of a stupa where people walk around murmuring mantras, visit the monastery fortress of Trashichhoedzong, the official residence of the current king and his government, ending with a visit to a craft center and a local bazaar. Overnight (B+B+D+C) = Breakfast and dinner at hotel, lunch at restaurant.

DAY 3: THIMPU/PHUNAKHA
Breakfast. Departure by road to Phunakha, passing the peak of Dochu-la at 3088 m. if the day permits you can see the great Himalayan peaks of over 7000 m. on the way make a short excursion to the Bhutanese style temple of Chimi Lakhang founded in 1499. Arrival to Phunaka, visit the monastery fortress or Dzong of Punakha.  Overnight (B+B+D) = Breakfast and dinner at hotel, lunch at restaurant.

DAY 4: PHUNAKHA
Breakfast. Start Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten trek, which is an easy 45 minutes hike to the top of the hill. It offers a breathtaking view of the Punakha valley. Then we will visit the Punakha suspension bridge and the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup nunnery. Day at leisure. Overnight.

DAY 5: PHUNAKHA/GANGTEY
Breakfast, visit the monastery of Sangcheen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang, located among forests, overlooking the valley, then visit the Simtokha Dzong, famous for its carved woodwork, built in 1627 is one of the oldest in the country and houses the institute of national language and culture. Arrival in Gangtey. Overnight.
(B+B+D+C) = Breakfast and dinner at hotel, lunch at restaurant.

DAY 6: GANGTEY
Visit Gangtey Goempo, which houses the scariest relics of all the monasteries in Bhutan and is famous for its incredible design. Later, take a short hike along the Gangtey nature trail (1.5 hours) to Khewa Lhakhang. On the way visit Semchubara village and a square chorten. Overnight.
(B+B+D+C) = Breakfast and dinner at hotel, lunch at restaurant.

DAY 7: GANGTEY/PARO

Breakfast. Departure by road to Paro. Arrival in Paro. In the afternoon visit of the Ta dzong, which dates back to the 17th century, and today houses the National Museum where magnificent historical collections of thangkas, armor, costumes and everyday objects are displayed. Overnight (B+B+D+C) = Breakfast and dinner at hotel, lunch at restaurant.

DAY 8: DEPARTURE PARO

Breakfast. Transfer to the airport to catch your flight to your next destination.
